It's one of the more common questions we get asked, and it's not always a straight forward answer!
If you're looking to install a single child restraint in the back seat, the middle position is technically the safest, purely because it's the farthest removed from the sides of the vehicle. However, both child restraints and vehicles are designed to manage side impacts extremely well, so the outboard seats are still considered extremely safe.
It's not always practical to use the middle seating position (especially if you're still recovering from labour) in which case the passenger side is favourable, as you'll be off the road when getting bub into and out of the car.
Even in side impact collisions, the outboard seating positions are extremely safe. A child was seated in the passenger side position in this car, and suffered only minor scratches.
So, in summary;
The middle position is technically the safest position, but not always practical.
The outboard positions are still extremely safe.
The passenger side is favourable, rather than the drivers side.
